Hunter-gatherer mobility patterns and socio-economic organisation are still at the backbone of all Palaeolithic research. In the 1970s and 80s several regional studies approached the topic of Levantine settlement patterns reaching differing conclusions. This study is the first to include all so far known and published Levantine Upper Palaeolithic sites in a comprehensive evaluation of settlement patterns taking into account the spatial site preservation and recovery conditions, distribution of vital resources as water and lithic raw material, the climatic and environmental development, locational factors of the sites as well as the working time and diversity of the recovered tool assemblages to assess the synchronic development of the different Levantine Upper Palaeolithic technocomplexes. These results are contrasted with the in-depth diachronic analysis of a small regional case study in southern Jordan, the Wadi Sabra, excavated by the CRC806 of the University of Cologne, Bonn and Aachen. Four exceptional assemblages are presented illustrating the techno-typological progression of the Levantine Upper- to the Epipalaeolithic. Finally, the data is compared to central European Rhenish sites raising important discussion points about climate determinism and adaptability of different settlement systems.
